Our story
Grapes and wines are in most cases a family tradition, passed down from generation to generation through years or even centuries. Our history as winemakers is an exception to this standard and began as a story of wine lovers.
Matthias is the Winzer, the vitner, the one who decided to start this adventure.
Originally from Austria, he moved from Salzburg to Stuttgart in 2011 to turn his career around, moving from mechanical engineer to sales manager in the automotive industry. In 2016, his life took another detour after he met Valeria. Also a mechanical engineer and originally from southern Italy, after a couple of years traveling around Europe, she settled in Stuttgart and living together, the two began to explore the world of wines, however only as consumers. Pushing them to go beyond the tasting experience is the purchase of an old house in Neckarweihingen.
The region is surrounded by vineyards, and the house sits on the river, while on the other side are acres of vineyard-covered hillsides.
During the renovation work, in between chatting in the yard, Matthias told of a thought that slowly, having that bucolic landscape in front of the house every day, was constantly buzzing in his head, which was to one day taste a self-made wine. Sharing this small and simple dream opened the door for us to make it real. Through word of mouth we found and purchased our first vineyard, exactly across the river.
Within one season we restored the vines and bottled our first red wine and more. We expanded by purchasing a second vineyard in Kleiningersheim, and since January 2024 we have also taken over a vineyard located between Poppenweiler and Neckarweihngen. Not only has our land increased but also our wine family is slowly expanding.
Ours is a story of a fantasy come true, a reality moved by the passion and care we devote to our grapes. And that, above all, is what we try to make people taste in a glass of our Wielo wines.
